Be clear about the job
Before comparing applications, agree which criteria matter and what evidence could demonstrate them. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences. Ambiguous criteria make it harder for either a person or a tool to support a fair, useful review.
Make the explanation visible
A useful screening assistant should help a reviewer find relevant information and see what is uncertain. It should make it possible to inspect the source, correct an extraction and understand why a match was suggested. A score alone is a thin basis for a consequential decision.
Keep responsibility with the team
Give reviewers a clear process for checking outputs, recording decisions and raising concerns. Review whether the workflow treats different applicants appropriately. Start with a bounded task, validate it in context and involve the colleagues responsible for recruitment and information governance.
Take one useful step.
- Agree the criteria before reviewing applications.
- Show evidence and gaps alongside any suggested match.
- Keep final decisions and escalation with authorised people.
